On 17 October, the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty hosted an official ceremony to launch and cancel the first issue of a new commemorative postage stamp dedicated to the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation.

The International Year was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to raise global awareness of the rapid melting of glaciers and the urgent need for international action to protect them.

The stamp was issued at the initiative of the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Centre under the auspices of UNESCO, in cooperation with the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan and JSC “Kazpost”. It is only the second postage stamp in the world dedicated to the preservation of glaciers.

This initiative highlights the contribution of Kazakhstan and Central Asia to global efforts to safeguard glaciers — vital sources of freshwater and archives of the planet’s climatic history.

The commemorative postage stamp is available for purchase on JSC “Kazpost” 's website.
