Khorog State University and the Aga Khan Foundation have announced the Summer University 2026, "Understanding Cryosphere Hazards: Integrating Glaciers, Glacial Lakes, and Permafrost", which will take place from 3 to 15 August 2026 in Khorog, Tajikistan. Organized under the Adaptive and Resilient Communities in their Habitat (ARCH) initiative with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the programme will strengthen knowledge and practical skills in understanding and managing cryosphere-related hazards.
The 13-day programme will bring together up to 30 participants aged 22 to 35, including students, early-career researchers, university faculty and practitioners from Central Asia and beyond. Through lectures, GIS and remote sensing exercises, field visits and group work, participants will explore glacier retreat, glacial lakes, permafrost degradation, disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation, while developing practical skills in hazard and risk assessment for mountain environments.
The Summer University will be held in Russian and English at Khorog State University and the University of Central Asia campus. Participation is fully funded for selected applicants, with airfare, visa costs, accommodation, meals, local transportation, field visits and learning materials covered by the organizers.
