National Cryosphere Process: Dushanbe Advances National and Subregional Planning
On 27 November 2025, Dushanbe hosted the second meeting of the Technical Working Group on the development of the National Glacier Preservation Fund, the National Action Plan (NAP), and the Subregional Joint Action Programme (SJAP) on the cryosphere. The meeting was organized by the Agency for Hydrometeorology under the regional GEF–UNDP–UNESCO Cryosphere Project.
The session brought together 25 representatives of government institutions and the scientific community to discuss measures for preserving the cryosphere and strengthening Tajikistan’s climate resilience. Participants highlighted the need for coordinated work on monitoring, scientific research, and the introduction of innovative approaches.
The meeting featured presentations on:
- the initiative to establish a National Glacier Preservation Fund
- draft National Action Plan on the Cryosphere for 2026–2034 and the Subregional Joint Action Programme for Central Asia
- the concept of a pilot demonstration project
The roadmap for consultations, interagency review, and approval of the NAP and SJAP was also discussed. Representatives of relevant organizations proposed ideas for the pilot project, which will provide practical solutions to enhance resilience to climate risks.
The decisions taken provide a basis for further development and implementation of measures on climate adaptation, glacier preservation, and water resources management, supported by national and external investments.
The meeting was held under the regional GEF–UNDP–UNESCO project Strengthening the Resilience of Central Asian Countries by Enabling Regional Cooperation to Assess Glacio-nival Systems to Develop Integrated Methods for Sustainable Development and Adaptation to Climate Change, implemented by the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty with financial support from the Global Environment Facility through the United Nations Development Programme.
