For Tajikistan, the problem of glacier melting is particularly urgent – the republic is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and acts as a key initiator of international glacier protection processes. In 2025, at Dushanbe's initiative, the UN declared the International Year of Glacier Preservation. Of Tajikistan's 14,000 glaciers, more than 1,000 have irreversibly disappeared over the past 30-40 years. If current melting rates continue, the region could lose a third of its glacial reserves by 2050. Tajikistan's glaciers form about 60% of Central Asia's water resources, making this problem critically important for regional water security.
