On July 8th, 2025, a devastating transboundary flood surge swept down the Lhende River from China into Nepal, impacting communities up to 100km downstream and destroying critical border infrastructure. The disaster killed eleven people and left 17 missing, while destroying the main "Friendship Bridge" and halting trans-Himalayan commerce. Seven hydropower projects were severely affected, taking nearly 250 megawatts offline. The event highlighted how supraglacial lakes—formed on top of glaciers—pose emerging climate risks that require enhanced transboundary monitoring and coordination.
